Головним героєм фільму фактично представлений Сем, а не Фродо; роль Арагорна мінімізована, Леголас і Гімлі відсутні, таран Гронд тягнуть не великі звірі, а мумаки, загибеллю Персня сюжет закінчується і наступних подій — атаки Сарумана на Шир, правління Арагорна — не описується тощо.
